OPEN CALL: Critical Visions I

Economies & ecologies of artistic and curatorial practices

The series of 3 without-charge workshops wishes to offer emerging artists and curators the chance to develop their practice in a collaborative context, under the mentorship of international specialists in the field. We want to address the difficulties that early-career artists and curators face in managing their path and to participate in the construction of a critical and sustainable ecosystem in the visual arts, both locally and at a European level.

The courses, taking place in May-June 2023, are conceived so that they equip the participants with practical skills and theoretical knowledge, while encouraging collective thinking and the formation of professional networks that are based on care and trust.

Each workshop will last for two days and will include presentations on behalf of the mentors, imaginative and collaborative exercises, and individual crit sessions. The workshop will take place at Suprainfinit Gallery and other locations in Bucharest carefully selected by the tutors.

Participation in all three sessions is strongly recommended. Prepare yourself for 6 intense days, but that will unfold in a safe and friendly environment.

The application deadline is 1 April 2023. The selection process will begin once the application period ends and, from that moment on, we aim to respond in 1 to 2 weeks.

(!!) The workshops will unfold exclusively in English. However, the gallery team will be there to assist participants with translation to Romanian where needed.

(!!!) Although we encourage early-career artists and curators based elsewhere than Bucharest to apply, we are unfortunately unable to cover transportation and accommodation costs. If you want to apply to a mobility fund, offered by a cultural or academic institution in order to cover expenses, we can support you with a confirmation letter.

Tutors:

Elizabeth del Prete – workshop between 8-9 May

Anne Faucheret – workshop between 1-2 June

Ella Krivanek – workshop between 20 & 21 June

As Senior Curator (Learning and Live Research) at UP Projects, Elisabeth oversees the public programmes, including Constellations, the annual development programme for artists and curators realised in partnership with Liverpool Biennial and Flat Time House. At UP she also leads on the research and development of a new public art commission. At Royal College of Art, Elisabeth is Associate Lecturer on the MA Curating Contemporary Art. In 2019 she was co-curator of the 12th Kaunas Biennial in Lithuania, and between 2010-16 Elisabeth worked as Post-War and Contemporary Art Specialist at Christie’s and Wright auction houses, in London and New York respectively.

From 2014 to 2022, she has been a curator at Kunsthalle. She is interested in art as a site for social critique, for radical speculation, and for alternative embodied knowledge production. Embracing (techno-)feminist and decolonial practices, her research currently revolves around collective methods of knowledge(s) circulation, engaged pedagogies, and experiences of togetherness.
